Literature Review for Climate-Aligned Capital Allocation and Investment Strategy

Download Resources

CalPERS, the largest public pension fund in the United States, commissioned a literature review of climate-related risks, to support its climate strategy pillars.

CCSI collaborated with the Sabin Center on Climate Change Law and Columbia Climate School’s Research Program on Sustainability Policy & Management to deliver a literature review assessing 221 papers looking at different dimensions of climate risk. The literature review constructs a taxonomy of 28 climate-related financial risks, provides an analytical framework to support investors when evaluating the relevance and interaction of various climate-related risks, and summarizes key literature from the past several years that analyze the relevance of these risks for investors.

The report Climate-Related Risks and Opportunities for Portfolio Managers: A Literature Review is accompanied by a database of the individual papers, available here.

Importantly, this report does not offer specific advice on the interpretation or analysis of the climate-related risk research presented herein. It identifies, summarizes, and categorizes relevant literature; it does not verify or endorse the accuracy, precision, or completeness of the underlying literature or the results summarized herein, and does not endorse any of the third-party findings or perspectives discussed throughout this report. Indeed, this study, and the accompanying database, contain a number of studies that reach contradictory and inconclusive findings. Reliance should not be placed on the views or information expressed herein when making any specific investment decision or choosing an investment strategy.

As a part of this project, the Columbia partners also conducted a research report on human capital management for portfolio managers.
