Mine of the Future Academy: Leadership in Climate-Smart Mining (CSM)

This program has been developed by the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), the Sustainable Minerals Institute at the University of Queensland, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as part of the Climate-Smart Mining (CSM) Initiative led by the World Bank Group.

Mid-level to senior working professionals in mining companies, industry associations, and businesses linked with mining.

Stage 1 (English language): Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia
Stage 2 (French language): Mauritania, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Guinea, Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire), Madagascar, and Senegal
Stage 3 (Spanish language): Beneficiary countries to be announced in the second semester of 2026

Requires access to a smart phone, tablet, or PC, and an internet connection.

Designed and taught by internationally recognized leaders and technical experts, this practical short course will prepare learners to lead and deliver on CSM by:

  • Building their technical foundation and operational know- how through thought-leading CSM insights, case studies, and the sharing of real-world experiences.
  • Equipping them with the expertise to implement energy transition, adaptation, resilience, and inclusive approaches at the mine site.
  • Connecting mine site action to global climate action goals.
  • Understanding global drivers to create momentum for CSM.

This program is structured in five modules—one foundational module followed by four modules that cover the six CSM pillars:

  • Module 1: Low/Zero-Carbon Solutions
  • Module 2: Climate Resilience & Adaptation
  • Module 3: Circular Economy
  • Module 4: Cross-Cutting Issues in Climate-Smart Mining (including Governance and Institutional Strengthening, Innovation & Productivity, and Investment De-Risking).

All core modules will:

  • Cover nature-based solutions, technology-based solutions, and new principles and practices in resource management.
  • Integrate inclusive and considered approaches, including gender-responsive climate-smart practices and community intersects.
  • Explain the climate action touchpoints for roles in finance, operations, engineering, HR, HSE, and community engagement.
  • Connect mine level actions with global priorities and trends.

In addition to the self-paced learning program, live webinars addressing:

  • Skills development and planning for climate transition and resilience priorities
  • Inclusive and empowering stakeholder engagement on climate priorities
  • Policy and regulatory engagement priorities for climate action
