The Executive Training on Minerals, Energy, Climate, and Sustainable Development (MECSD) is a program designed to equip participants with the necessary skills to ensure that critical mineral and renewable energy resources contribute to sustainable development in developing economies and support the achievement of climate goals.
Decarbonized energy systems and economies require mineral-intensive technologies. As demand for critical energy transition minerals and metals increases, investments in mineral and industrial value chains and in the development and deployment of renewable energy systems can be a springboard for sustainable development in resource-rich developing economies. At the same time, efforts to tap their extensive potential benefits must be accompanied by measures to address their often-significant impacts on communities, land use, nature, and greenhouse gas emissions, and to ensure that they generate social and environmental co-benefits.
To leverage mineral and renewable energy resources for sustainable development and climate action, countries face challenges related to the need for a robust and implementable planning, policy, and legal framework; infrastructure design and regulation; value addition; and environmental protection. Achieving climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resilience goals requires policy and finance for mines, downstream industries, and energy systems; the responsible and increasingly circular supply of critical minerals for renewable energy technologies; the coordinated deployment of renewable energy systems; and just transitions away from fossil fuels.
Each day in the two-week course will focus on a key theme for climate action and sustainable development in mineral and renewable energy value chains, covering various interrelated areas:
The program is designed for mid-level public sector officials from national and regional organizations and civil society representatives from resource-rich developing countries whose responsibilities relate to the development or management of critical mineral, industrial, and renewable energy value chains.

Please Note: A select number of representatives from the private sector and development agencies may also be admitted.
The next training will take place from June 1-12, 2026.
The entire 2026 program will be held online through a combination of asynchronous preparatory material
and interactive (live) online sessions.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until April 30, 2026. Please note that all participants must be able to read and communicate in English.
Please note that we are requiring a $1500 program fee from all accepted participants, with a limited number of partial or full scholarships available for candidates from low-income countries or civil society organizations.
