Hilal Elver, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, discussed her most recent report, which focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a potentially transformative tool to advance the realization of the right to food, as well as other economic, social and cultural rights. Inequality, and the inequitable distribution of food and productive resources, remains a significant barrier to the realization of the right to food, especially for populations that have been historically and structurally left behind. Engaging these populations in the policy process and implementing the SDGs from a holistic, human rights-based approach will revitalize efforts to eliminate hunger and malnutrition and enable the universal enjoyment of the right to food.
