Joao Paulo Veiga (Professor of Political Science, Universidade de Sao Paulo) and Scott Martin (Adjunct Assistant Professor at SIPA) discussed the dilemmas and opportunities faced in the complex relations between mining and processing operations and the communities where they conduct extractive activities. They explored stakeholder relations, contributions to local development, challenges of sustainability, and processes of conflict and cooperation among transnational corporations, local civil society, and local and regional governments. Their research focuses on the state of Para, and the bauxite/aluminum operations of Alcoa and Alubrasand Alunorte, the latter two subsidiaries of Vale.
